- What inspired you to specialize in Lomi Lomi Nui and Myofascial Energy Release?
I had an issue with my sciatic nerve and a sharp pain that extended down to my heel. It had become chronic, and at times, unbearable. This led me to enroll in my first course on Myofascial Energetic Release in Poland.
- Can you describe the main principles and techniques of Lomi Lomi Nui massage?
The main principle of Lomi Lomi Nui is holistic—it works with the body, mind, and spirit to restore their connection, bring back the free flow of life energy, or “mana,” within the body, and re-establish balance and harmony. The massage involves long, rhythmic movements across the entire body that mimic the motion of the ocean. It’s not just a physical practice; it begins with prayer and intentions that set the direction for the energy.
- How does Myofascial Energy Release address tension and pain compared to traditional massage techniques?
MER is not exactly a massage technique but rather a “bodywork” modality. Traditional myofascial systems focus heavily on structural integration, but my teachers have also trained in various psychotherapeutic modalities such as Somatic Experiencing, Compassionate Inquiry, Breathwork, and others. This adds a focus on processing frozen or rejected emotions and sensations within the nervous system.
The core principles are fairly simple:
Breathing: Ideally continuous, serving as an anchor for the “here and now” while also energetically charging the body.
Meditation and Felt Sense: Taking time to observe different sensations after the fascia is released in the body.
Unwinding: The nervous system’s ability to self-regulate.
- How do you personalize sessions to meet each client’s individual needs?
It’s always very spontaneous, and I follow my intuition. Sometimes I like to focus a lot on the legs and arms, as the extremities are grounding. “Joint Release” techniques help when there’s resistance, allowing the energy to return to the abdomen and heart.
- What physical or emotional issues do clients usually address with these therapies?
It varies. At the retreat center in Greece where I offered sessions this summer, people came with the intention of transforming “blockages.” Here in Bulgaria, I sense that clients more often focus on resolving physical issues. There are also always people who come simply to relax and recharge, which is always a valid reason.
- What benefits can clients expect after a Lomi Lomi Nui or MER session?
- A more regulated nervous system and a greater sense of space within the body.
- Improved connection, balance, and harmony.
- MER is highly effective in clearing fear from the nervous system.
- Lomi can be more dynamic and enjoyable, which also aids in nervous system regulation.
- Movements and sensations in the body that allow for contemplation and reflection—sometimes offering insights or messages.
- What advice would you give someone trying these techniques for the first time?
Try to stay as present as possible with your breathing. This prevents the mind from analyzing and wandering, allowing the body to recharge and create space to process unresolved information in the nervous system. Treat the session as something to actively participate in. Whenever I notice myself thinking, I anchor back to the sensations in the body.
- Are there specific recommendations for post-session care?
Yes. The fascia contains a lot of waste fluids, and the body starts to cleanse itself. It’s always beneficial to drink plenty of water. Silence, meditation, and some rest, allowing the nervous system to enter its parasympathetic state, can be very nurturing.
- Why did you choose BalanceSense Studio as the place for your practice?
Because I saw potential in the space and was welcomed with a lot of openness to the systems I use.
